Properties of Ferromanganese

Carbon Content

Low carbon ferromanganese contains a relatively low carbon content compared to regular ferro manganese alloys. The reduced carbon content contributes to improved steel quality by minimizing carbon-related impurities.

Manganese Content

Manganese is the primary constituent of ferro manganese and is responsible for its properties. Low carbon ferromanganese typically has a manganese content ranging from 70% to 85%. The higher the manganese content, the greater its ability to deoxidize and desulfurize steel.

Desulfurizing Agent

Low carbon ferromanganese acts as an effective desulfurizing agent due to its high manganese content. It combines with sulfur present in steel to form manganese sulfide, which separates as a slag during steel refining.

Deoxidizing Agent

By removing oxygen from molten steel, low carbon ferromanganese helps to improve steel quality. It forms manganese oxide that floats to the surface as slag, promoting cleaner steel production.

Grain Refining

The presence of low carbon ferromanganese in steel contributes to grain refinement, resulting in improved mechanical properties, such as increased strength and toughness.

Temperature Stability

Low carbon ferromanganese exhibits excellent temperature stability, making it suitable for a wide range of steelmaking processes, including electric arc furnaces and oxygen converters.

Smelting Process

Blast Furnace Smelting

Ferromanganese blast furnaces are generally used below 1000 meters, and the equipment and production process are roughly the same as that of ironmaking blast furnaces.
In the process of falling from the top of the furnace, high-priced manganese oxide (MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4) is gradually reduced to MnO by CO as the temperature rises.

Electric Furnace Smelting

Reduction smelting of ferromanganese has two kinds of flux method (also known as low manganese slag method) and no flux method (high manganese slag method).
The principle of the flux method is the same as that of blast furnace smelting, except that electric energy replaces the coke used for heating.

FAQ

Q: What is ferromanganese used for?

A: Ferromanganese is used as a degasser, deoxidizer, and desulphurizer in steel production, removes nitrogen and other hazardous elements that are found during iron melting. Used in manufacturing steel and, to a lesser extent, other metal alloys.

Q: What minerals are in ferromanganese?

A: In general, they can be called ferromanganese deposits (FMD), a term that describes accumulations of Fe- and Mn-oxides from a wide range of environments such as marine manganese nodules, soil nodules, and iron and manganese seeps (Ghiorse and Ehrlich, 1992).

Q: What is the ferromanganese reaction?

A: Nitrided ferromanganese is an additive agent for nitrogen in certain grades of steel. The production process is based on the high affinity of manganese for nitrogen in the solid state. The compacts of medium carbon ferromanganese or manganese metal powders are reacted with nitrogen at 600–1000 °C.

Q: What is the difference between ferro manganese and manganese?

A: Ferromanganese is an alloy of iron and manganese, with other elements such as silicon, carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus. The primary use of ferromanganese is as a type of processed manganese source to add to different types of steel, such as stainless steel.

As one of the leading ferromanganese manufacturers and suppliers in China, we warmly welcome you to buy high-grade ferromanganese from our factory. All our products are with high quality and competitive price.
